The GRAMMYs weekend started off with the news that shook the whole music industry and also, of course, the world. The news of the passing of the iconic Whitney Houston spread through the world like a wildfire, shaking everyone who admires the huge and amazing talent that she has.
Instant knee jerk reactions of condolence messages and such started flooding through twitter, facebook and any other social networking medias that you can think of. Everyone was just as shocked as everyone else. Of course then, The Grammys producers quickly responded to this news by rewriting the whole Grammys show by including tributes to the late Whitney Houston…or at least that’s what they said.
So then all eyes turned to the 54th Grammy Award Show the next day after Whitney’s passing, with everyone curious to know what they have in store for the tribute (although it had been confirmed that Jennifer Hudson will lead it) and also who will prevail that evening with the most Grammys.
Pre-show winners announcements were just as exciting as the show itself. Adele winning 2 Grammys and Foo Fighters won 3, AND THE NIGHT HADN’T EVEN STARTED YET.
Then there comes the moment everyone had waited for, The 54th Grammy Awards Show finally started with words from LL Cool J. RESPECT FOR THE MAN.
Yeah you can tell, I didn’t catch the red carpet so I had no idea at all of what they were wearing and such.
I won’t go down performance by performance in order so I’ll just go down from the top of my list.
And the top of my list, ADELE. After being absent for quite some time due to her throat surgery, SHE BLEW MY MIND. Her voice is…crazy, unreal and just outstanding. She don’t really need any backing music to be honest. She can just sing her ass of without any music and it’ll sound better than anything you’ve ever heard. Love Adele and all her music.
Second on my list goes off to Jennifer Hudson. With her tribute to Whitney Houston by singing “I Will Always Love You”, I must give props to her. If I have to pick any current singer that is able to do a rendition of Whitney and brings it like Whitney, I will pick Jennifer any day. She embodies her and their voice are sorta similar.
Now this goes against my personal preference but Taylor Swift’s performance was…interesting. Me, not being a fan of Taylor and highly disliking her, was actually quite interested with her performance. It was actually unique but also quite weird. Some of her moves with the guitar or banjo makes me giggle. She’s tall and very close to look like a stick figure and with her doing some “head-down lean-down to the guitar” moves, she made me giggle. But one thing that captured me was the costume which was anything but glamorous. She looked like she just got out of bed and asked to do a performance immediately. Unique and interesting.
Oh almost forgot to mention how cool Nicki Minaj’s set was too! Fire combined with a mix of theatricality and heavily backed singing did end up pretty good too. Well at least most people were just captivated by the choreographies and effect but not the actual singing.
Coldplay…I don’t quite know what to say about their set. It was pretty cool and psychedelic with all the colourful stick lights that lit up the whole Staples Center but I’m not really sure the whole performance was one that everyone would remember…
KATY!!!! Have I mentioned how much I love Katy Perry? Yes her live vocal isn’t really good but her performances always captivates me! By bringing her latest single and also the lead single of her next album, “Part of Me”, Katy really brought it. Loving the new hair and she’s just as gorgeous as ever.
And lets all don’t forget about Bruno Mars. It was quite a fun performance and promotes more of his showmanship than his vocals…which actually sells more nowadays than being an amazing vocalist. It was fun and the stage set for his performance was one to remember, bringing a throwback 50s theatre set.
Lets see… Oh… I was quite disappointed to be honest by Alicia Keys’ tribute for the late Etta James. Wasn’t a good performance at all. Very disappointing to be frank.
Rihanna…well she’s Rihanna. She brought it and she really did. Was quite surprised of her vocals which from what I can recall was not that good. Props to RiRi!
Oh and this one I must really slam. Chris Brown. I actually managed to alter his song lyrics during his performance…
“Everywhere, everywhere.. Everywhere I go… I lipsync, I lipsync… And beat up all the girls…”
Yeah.. Sounds good right Chris? You can change it by all means I won’t ask for any royalty.
What was that by Chris Brown?! A full lipsync performance is not what I call a live music performance and therefore I have to slam his performance to the trash can. Although despite of that I must agree he has got some moves. Sick moves!! But vocals? errr…..
And well that is it for the performance reviews and if I miss out any please tell me so.
And last but not least though, the winners for the Grammys were just as right as it could be and I could not imagine any more deserving winner for the Album of The Year, Record of The Year and Song of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance categories other than…Adele. SO proud of Adele and she’s just one of the greatest vocalists of all time. She deserves them SO MUCH!! And she making a clean sweep of winning 6 out of 6 nominations wasn’t a surprise at all. And congrats to The Foos for winning 4 Grammys! This time all the winners fully deserved their respective awards.
Overall I really loved the whole Grammys 2012 show! Exciting, fun and also not to forget they still kept its whole purpose of giving this show as a tribute to Whitney Houston. Amazing stuff from the producers this year, R.I.P Whitney Houston and I’m looking forward for the 55th Grammy Awards Show in 2013.
xoxo,
Alex
